Eutrophication
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004126
The process by which a body of water becomes progressively enriched with nutrients, primarily phosphorus and nitrogen. This nutrient loading stimulates excessive growth of aquatic plants and algae, leading to algal blooms. Subsequent decomposition of this organic matter consumes dissolved oxygen, creating hypoxic or anoxic conditions detrimental to aquatic organisms.
