Algistatic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000383

Relating to a substance or condition that inhibits the growth and reproduction of an algal population without necessarily killing the individual organisms. An algistatic agent prevents the proliferation of algae, keeping their numbers at a manageable level and preventing the formation of blooms. This effect is distinct from that of an algicide, which is lethal to algae, as an algistatic effect is reversible if the agent is removed from the environment.
