Algal bloom
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000381
A rapid increase in the population of algae in an aquatic environment, resulting in a visible discoloration of the water. This phenomenon occurs when conditions such as nutrient availability, sunlight, and water temperature are favorable for algal growth. Some algal blooms, particularly those involving cyanobacteria or dinoflagellates, can produce toxins harmful to aquatic life and humans.
