Clathrate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000687
A solid compound in which molecules of one substance are trapped within the crystal lattice of another, without forming chemical bonds. In geology, this refers primarily to gas hydrates, where methane molecules are encased in cages of water ice. Methane clathrates are abundant in permafrost regions and deep ocean sediments, representing a large potential energy resource.
