Hydrate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001885

A crystalline solid compound formed when water molecules encapsulate gas molecules, typically methane, under specific conditions of low temperature and high pressure. Gas hydrates can form in drilling fluid systems, particularly in deepwater operations, leading to blockages in flowlines and blowouts. Inhibitors like glycols or salts are added to drilling fluids to prevent hydrate formation.
