Ground that remains continuously frozen for two or more consecutive years, consisting of soil, rock, or sediment. Drilling operations in permafrost regions require specialized techniques and drilling fluids to prevent thawing, wellbore instability, and damage to the environment. The depth of permafrost can range from a few meters to hundreds of meters.
