A distinct layer of sedimentary rock or unconsolidated sediment, distinguishable from layers above and below by differences in lithology, grain size, or other physical characteristics. Beds represent individual depositional events and are fundamental units in stratigraphic analysis. Their thickness can range from a few millimeters to several meters.
