A near-surface zone of unconsolidated or partially consolidated material that has undergone physical and chemical alteration due to exposure to the atmosphere, water, and biological activity. This layer exhibits low seismic velocities compared to the underlying unweathered rock. Its thickness can vary from a few meters to tens of meters, affecting seismic data quality.
