Weathering correction

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004493

A static correction applied to seismic reflection data to compensate for the time delay caused by the low-velocity near-surface layer, or weathered zone. The variable thickness and velocity of this layer distort the arrival times of seismic waves, misaligning reflections from deeper horizons. This correction is calculated from uphole surveys or first-break refraction data and shifts the data to a reference datum below the weathering.
