Aerated layer

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000068

A near-surface layer of unconsolidated soil, sand, or weathered rock containing air in its pore spaces instead of being fully saturated with water. This layer exhibits a very low seismic velocity compared to the underlying saturated rock. The thickness and velocity of the aerated layer must be accounted for when processing seismic reflection data to correct for travel time delays, a process known as applying weathering or static corrections.
