Near-surface correction

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002516

A correction applied to seismic data to compensate for travel time distortions caused by the low-velocity, unconsolidated layer near the Earth's surface. These variations, if uncorrected, can degrade the quality of the seismic image by misaligning reflections from deeper horizons. The correction involves calculating time shifts, known as static corrections, that are applied to each trace to simulate placing sources and receivers on a flat datum plane below the weathered zone.
