Velocity correction

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004020

An adjustment applied to seismic travel times to compensate for variations in the speed of sound through different subsurface layers. These corrections convert the recorded reflection times into a more accurate representation of the subsurface geometry and depth. Velocity models for these corrections are derived from well data, such as velocity surveys or sonic logs, or from the seismic data itself through velocity analysis.
