Velocity anomaly
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004019
A localized region in the subsurface where the seismic velocity is significantly different from the surrounding or expected background velocity. These anomalies can be caused by geological features such as salt domes, gas-charged sediments, overpressured zones, or carbonate buildups. A low-velocity anomaly beneath a target reflector can create a false structural high, an effect known as a velocity pull-down.
