Density contrast
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004283
The difference in bulk density between a body and its surroundings or between adjacent rock layers. In gravity surveys it is the quantity that produces an anomaly: a body denser than its host gives a positive anomaly, a lighter one a negative anomaly. In seismic reflection it contributes to the impedance contrast, but a reflection also requires a velocity contrast, since acoustic impedance is density multiplied by velocity.
