Compaction correction
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000770
An adjustment applied to seismic velocity or porosity data to account for the effects of sediment compaction with increasing burial depth. As overburden pressure rises, porosity decreases and bulk density increases, causing seismic velocities to rise in a predictable trend. The correction removes this background trend to isolate velocity anomalies caused by factors like lithology or fluid content, often using an established depth-velocity function for a specific basin.
