Differential compaction
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001069
The uneven reduction in volume of sedimentary layers due to varying degrees of overburden pressure and sediment composition. This process occurs when sediments with different compressibilities are deposited adjacent to each other, leading to differential subsidence and the formation of structural traps. It can create subtle structural highs over more rigid underlying features.
