Differential pressure
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001070
The difference between the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling fluid column in the wellbore and the fluid pressure within the pores of the formation rock. When the wellbore pressure is higher than the formation pressure, the condition is overbalanced, which prevents formation fluids from entering the well. An excessive overbalance can lead to formation damage or cause the drill string to become stuck against the side of the hole, a situation known as differential sticking.
