Differential sticking

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001074

The immobilization of the drill string against the wellbore wall when a section of pipe contacts a permeable formation under a higher wellbore pressure. This phenomenon occurs when the drilling fluid's hydrostatic pressure exceeds the formation's pore pressure, creating a force that holds the pipe in place. It is a common drilling problem that can lead to costly delays and equipment damage.
