Fluid loss

The undesirable invasion of the liquid phase of a drilling fluid into permeable formations, leaving behind a filter cake on the wellbore wall. Excessive fluid loss can lead to formation damage, differential sticking, and increased drilling fluid costs. It is measured in milliliters (mL) during a standard API filtration test.
