Stuck pipe

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003665

A condition where the drill string cannot be moved, either rotated or pulled, within the wellbore. The two main causes are differential sticking, where high differential pressure presses the pipe against a permeable formation, and mechanical sticking, caused by wellbore geometry issues or debris. Jarring tools are activated to deliver impact loads to free the pipe, but if unsuccessful, the pipe may have to be severed and the lower section abandoned.
