Stuffing box
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003666
A cylindrical chamber or housing around a rotating or reciprocating shaft, such as a valve stem or pump shaft, designed to hold packing material that creates a seal to prevent fluid leakage. The packing is compressed by a gland follower, which can be tightened to adjust the sealing force. Stuffing boxes are common in older valve designs and many types of pumps.
