Stylolite

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003667

A serrated, irregular surface or seam within a rock mass, formed by pressure solution, where mineral material has been dissolved under stress. These features are common in carbonate rocks like limestone and dolomite and appear as jagged, dark lines in core or on an outcrop. Stylolites filled with insoluble residues like clay or organic matter can act as barriers to fluid flow, reducing vertical permeability within a reservoir.
