Subsidence

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003675

The gradual sinking or downward settling of the Earth's surface with little or no horizontal motion. It can be caused by natural geologic processes like sediment compaction in a delta, or induced by human activities such as the withdrawal of subsurface fluids like groundwater or hydrocarbons. The reduction of pore pressure from fluid extraction causes the reservoir rock to compact under the weight of the overlying strata, leading to surface depression.
