Marine flooding surface

A surface that separates older, underlying strata from younger, overlying strata, representing an abrupt increase in water depth. It forms during a rapid rise in sea level or a rapid subsidence of the basin floor. This surface often indicates a change in depositional environment from shallower to deeper marine conditions.
