Marker bed
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002282
A thin, distinctive rock layer that is recognizable over a wide area and therefore serves for correlation between wells and seismic lines. Coal seams, limestones, volcanic ash layers and condensed shales are typical examples. Where the layer contrasts strongly in acoustic impedance with its neighbours it gives a continuous seismic reflection that interpreters map as a reference horizon.
