Nonconformity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004397

An unconformity where younger sedimentary rocks directly overlie older, eroded igneous or metamorphic rocks. This type of geological boundary represents a gap in the geologic record where the underlying crystalline basement rocks were exposed at the surface and eroded before the deposition of the overlying sediments. A nonconformity indicates a period of major uplift, erosion, and subsequent subsidence.
