Basement

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004233

The underlying, older, and more crystalline rock complex upon which younger sedimentary basins are deposited. This foundation consists of igneous and metamorphic rocks that are non-sedimentary and lack the porosity and permeability to serve as conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. The depth to basement is a key parameter in basin analysis, as it defines the maximum potential thickness of the overlying, potentially hydrocarbon-bearing sedimentary section.
