Bedrock

The solid, unweathered rock that lies beneath loose surface materials such as soil, sand, gravel, or alluvium. It forms the foundation upon which overlying geological formations rest and can consist of igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary rock types. In drilling operations, bedrock is the first solid rock encountered after penetrating unconsolidated overburden.
