Rock types
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003182
The geological classifications of solid mineral matter that form the Earth's crust, which are broadly categorized by their origin and formation processes. These include igneous rocks, which solidify from molten magma or lava; sedimentary rocks, formed from the accumulation and compaction of sediments; and metamorphic rocks, which result from the alteration of existing rocks by heat, pressure, or chemical processes. In petroleum geology, sedimentary rocks like sandstone and limestone are the primary reservoir rocks.
