Pore

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002863

A void or open space within a rock, not occupied by solid mineral matter, that can contain fluids such as oil, gas, or water. Pores are classified by their origin as either primary (formed with the rock) or secondary (formed by later processes like dissolution or fracturing). The size, shape, and interconnectedness of pores determine a rock's porosity and permeability, which are fundamental properties for a hydrocarbon reservoir.
