Nonconductive drilling fluid
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002553
A drilling fluid whose continuous phase is electrically insulating, as in oil-base and synthetic-base muds. Current cannot flow through it, so galvanic logging tools that inject current into the formation, such as laterologs and micro-resistivity devices, cannot be used, whereas induction logs, which induce current with a magnetic field, work well. Water-based muds, in contrast, conduct through dissolved salts, which makes electrode tools workable.
