Flooding surface
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001466
A marine erosion surface or a surface of non-deposition that separates older strata from younger, overlying strata, indicating an abrupt increase in water depth. It represents a rapid transgression of the sea over a previously exposed or shallow-water area. Flooding surfaces are key stratigraphic markers used in sequence stratigraphy to define parasequences and systems tracts.
