Maximum flooding surface

A surface within a sedimentary sequence that represents the point of greatest marine transgression and the deepest water conditions during a sea-level cycle. It is characterized by the most distal marine facies and often serves as a correlative marker across a basin. This surface separates the transgressive systems tract from the highstand systems tract.
