Retrogradation

The landward shift of a shoreline and its facies belts, so that each younger unit is deposited farther toward the land than the one below it. It happens when relative sea-level rise outpaces sediment supply, and it builds a backstepping stack of parasequences in a transgressive systems tract. It is the opposite of progradation, in which deposits step seaward.
