Progradation

The seaward or basinward advance of a shoreline or sedimentary environment due to the accumulation of sediment. This process results in the deposition of younger sediments on top of older, more basinward deposits. Progradation is a key mechanism in the formation of deltaic and shelf-edge reservoir systems.
