Regression

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003087

A geological process where the sea level falls relative to the land, exposing previously submerged areas. This results in the seaward migration of the shoreline and the deposition of progressively coarser-grained sediments over finer-grained ones. Evidence of regression is often found in stratigraphic sequences, indicating changes in depositional environments.
