Highstand systems tract
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001833
The set of sedimentary deposits that accumulates during the late stage of a sea-level rise, when the rate of eustatic rise slows and sea level is at or near its maximum. During this period, sediment supply exceeds the rate of accommodation space creation, causing the shoreline to build outward into the basin in a progradational pattern. The highstand systems tract is bounded below by the maximum flooding surface and above by the next sequence boundary, which marks the subsequent fall in sea level.
