Delta

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000989

A landform created by the deposition of sediment at the mouth of a river where it enters a slower-moving or standing body of water, such as a lake or an ocean. The decrease in the river's velocity causes it to drop its sediment load, forming a fan-shaped body of sand, silt, and clay. Deltaic deposits are common settings for petroleum reservoirs due to the frequent interfingering of porous sand bodies and organic-rich shales.
