Unconsolidated particulate material, such as sand, silt, clay, or organic matter, that has been transported and deposited by natural agents like water, wind, or ice. Over geological time, sediments can become lithified to form sedimentary rocks. These materials are the building blocks of many hydrocarbon reservoir and source rocks.
