An accumulation of sediment, mineral matter, or organic material laid down by natural processes such as water, wind, ice, or biological activity. These accumulations can form layers or bodies of rock over geological time. Hydrocarbon deposits, for example, are accumulations of oil and natural gas within porous and permeable reservoir rocks.
