Compaction
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000769
The process by which sediments are progressively compressed under the weight of overlying material, leading to a reduction in pore space and an increase in bulk density. This physical process expels water from the sediment and reorients grains, contributing to the lithification of loose sediments into solid rock. Compaction is a key factor in the burial and maturation of organic matter into hydrocarbons.
