Lithification
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002188
The set of processes that convert loose sediments into solid sedimentary rock. Compaction from the weight of overlying layers squeezes out water and reduces pore volume, while cementation fills the remaining spaces with minerals that precipitate from pore fluids, binding the grains together. This transformation creates the sandstones, shales, and limestones that form petroleum reservoirs and seals; common cementing minerals are calcite, quartz, and hematite.
