Compaction
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004544
The process by which a material, such as snow or soil, becomes denser due to the rearrangement of its particles under pressure or other forces, reducing its pore space. In snow science, compaction occurs as snow settles and grains bond, increasing its density and strength. This process is a key factor in snow metamorphism and avalanche formation.
