Metamorphosis of snow

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007225

The process of change in the physical properties and structure of snow crystals after deposition, driven by temperature gradients, pressure, and vapor diffusion. This transformation can lead to the formation of different snow types, such as depth hoar, rounded grains, or melt-freeze crusts. These changes significantly affect the mechanical strength and stability of a snowpack, influencing avalanche risk.
