Rain crust
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008363
A layer of ice formed on a snowpack surface when rain falls onto snow and subsequently freezes. This process occurs when air temperatures drop below freezing after a rain event, solidifying the wet snow surface into a hard, impermeable layer. Rain crusts can create unstable conditions within the snowpack, contributing to avalanche hazards.
