Wind crust
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010245
A hard, dense layer on the surface of a snowpack, formed by the mechanical action of wind. The wind breaks down individual snow crystals and packs them tightly together, creating a firm surface without necessarily involving melting and refreezing. This crust can support the weight of a skier but is distinct from a melt-freeze crust, which forms from the refreezing of surface meltwater.
