Spring crust

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009164

A hard, icy layer that forms on the surface of a snowpack during spring, resulting from repeated cycles of melting and refreezing. During the day, solar radiation melts the surface snow, and at night, the meltwater refreezes into a dense, solid layer. This crust can support the weight of a person or animal, but it can also create hazardous conditions for skiing or travel if it breaks unexpectedly.
