Firnspiegel

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005596

A thin, transparent, and often highly reflective layer of ice that forms on the surface of firn or old snow. It develops when a shallow layer of surface snow melts and then refreezes, creating a smooth, glassy appearance. This ice layer can significantly increase the albedo of the snowpack and make travel across glaciers more hazardous due to reduced friction.
