Firn field

An extensive area covered by firn, which is granular, compacted snow that has persisted through at least one summer. These fields are characteristic of the accumulation zones of glaciers and ice sheets, where snowfall exceeds melt. They represent a transitional zone where fresh snow gradually transforms into glacial ice.
