Firnification

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005595

The metamorphic process by which fresh snowfall is transformed into firn, and subsequently into glacial ice, through compaction, recrystallization, and refreezing of meltwater. This process involves the gradual increase in density and decrease in porosity of the snowpack over time. It is a fundamental process in the formation and growth of glaciers and ice sheets.
